Some instructors lead with their intelligence. Player implementation comes second. The great ones do the opposite: they shape their message so everything serves the player holding the bat. Their expertise shows through the clarity.
Tuesday night’s talk with Mike Murphy and Pete LaForest was exactly that — profound and practical — plus, it was genuinely fun!
Robin Roberts once said of Greg Maddux, “The hallmark of genius is simplicity.”
Pete and Mike brought that same spirit. They shared high-level concepts in a way that connected for everyone — pitching coaches, Little Leaguers, and yes, even my 12-year-old, who listened as part of his homework.
More than once I caught myself thinking: “This might be the most magnetic hitting conversation I’ve heard.”
Humble & Effective
Mike and Pete talk with each other for the players.
They’re a rare mix: thousands of at-bats between them and thousands of hours teaching hitters how to become consistent. They understand the theory, but they prioritize the “how-to.”
Their focus on productive batter’s box habits — approach + swing — sticks because they present it like two happy warriors swapping wisdom. The fun they had is contagious.
“Some hitters go 0-for-7 on a weekend and ask what they’re doing wrong. You have to remember you’re still doing a lot of things right.”
— Coach LaForest
“The Last Command Rule keeps the focus on the approach and the barrel, not the body.”
— Coach Murphy
The audio from Tuesday is shared above in a new format so you can listen while driving or winding down at the end of the day. Wish us luck as we test out Substack’s podcasting tools. Enjoy the 50 minutes — I hope you get as much out of it as I did.
Coach Trosky’s Message — Enjoy the Game
